meditation

This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector.

The core insight that got me interested: "moments of recognizing your thoughts drifting and bringing them back to your breath" are not failures, they are reps.

  • each rep is a success that makes you stronger.
  • you are training concentration like a muscle.
  • it is satisfying and rewarding and important for the same reason weightlifting is satisfying.
  • Ram Dass says there's a point of practice where you're in a meditative state as the default. Instead of saying, "Oh, I should meditate now.", you're saying "I should stop meditating so I can go do the dishes".
