eight-fold path
This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector.Academic components:
- Right view (right understanding): seeing reality as it really is and understanding the four noble truths. This understanding can begin as intellectual, but should ultimately become 'penetrative' or deep understanding resulting from direct experience developed through meditation. In particular, it means the absence of delusion, and particularly the delusion that we have (or are) a separate self.
- Right intention / right thought: avoid attachment to selfish goals or grudges; develop thoughts of love and grace.
Life components:
- Right speech: do not lie, slander, gossip, etc.
- Right action: do not kill, steal, fornicate, etc.
- Right livelihood: make your living doing work that helps rather than hurts others.
Meditative components:
- Right effort: exert the willpower to follow the path and bring your mind into positive states.
- Right mindfulness: be aware of your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations.
- Right concentration.
