vegetarian
This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector.- Inspired by NameRedacted, I'm considering going 'mostly' vegetarian. What would that mean for me?
- I don't myself buy meats or dairy products that are mass-produced, in the sense of likely involving cruelty. This includes most grocery store beef, pork, poultry, etc. It probably does not include fish or honey, unless I learn that those things are produced cruelly.
- If 'ethically produced' animal products are too expensive, then maybe I don't need the animal product.
- I prefer to support plausible meat substitutes: Beyond or Impossible burgers, etc.
- When would I eat meat?
- If it's enough of a special occasion or hype meal that I'm willing to spend money on good meat.
- If someone else is preparing the meal and I don't have choice. Currently that includes:
- meals hosted at people's houses,
- or Google lunches where I don't get to customize the meal around being vegetarian but still balanced and complete and tasty.
- Lattes: for no good reason except that they're delicious and an important part of a balanced diet for me.
- What am I 'giving up' to take this position? That's not the point. We'll only get to a more ethical world by supporting technologies such that most of us can go meat-free without 'giving up' much of anything.
- I admit I probably wouldn't be doing this without the existence of good meat substitutes.
