Pointing out the Great Way
This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector.Attempt to outline Dan Brown's version of the mahamudra path to awakening:
- 'Ordinary' emptiness practices:
- Emptiness of self. Search for the self in your field of experience. When you don't find it as a self-existent thing, there will be an experiential shift. Yet something remains in your experience outside of self; affirm awareness as your base of operation.
- Emptiness of perception: focus in turn on vision, hearing, felt sensations, smell, taste. For each sensation, take the view that it is "in the mind, created by mind". What we're actually seeing is empty awareness expressing itself to itself.
- Emptiness of thought: observe thoughts as they arise.
- Extraordinary emptiness: time and space. Ocean and Waves practice.
- One Taste yoga:
- All phenomena have the same taste.
- Realization of non-duality
- Sealing emptiness (like intensifying) leads to automatic emptiness - 'emptiness cruise control'. We're not telling things that they're empty, we're just looking at them deeply and seeing their emptiness, faster and faster, and with broader and broader range that extends to include all limiting assumptions.
- Non-meditation.
