weak ties
This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector. The "strength of weak ties": most good things in life come from people you barely know.
This is because your close, regular connections are too similar to you. Almost by definition they can't provide novel perspectives or opportunities.
Increasing your luck "surface area" is one reason to cultivate weak ties. These can be friends of friends, random strangers at parties, sometime your parents know, etc.
But it's not all about luck. Weak ties can also be resources if you have a specific, concrete need. They are how you broadcast through a wider network that you have the desire for some (hopefully mutually beneficial) transaction : finding a job, housing, etc.
