taṇhā

This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector.

Buddhist (Pali) term referring to craving, longing, desire for the world to be other than as it is. This includes craving good things and aversion to bad things (vibhava-taṇhā, craving the non-existence of some experience).

In the four noble truths, it is the principal cause of dukkha, and also the route to eliminating it.
