stopping time

This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector.

A stopping time for a stochastic process is a time-valuedThat is, integer-valued for discrete-time processes and real-valued for continuous-time processes. random variable τ\tau such that the event {τ=t}\{\tau = t\} can be evaluated using only information available up to time tt (formally, the event is contained in Ft\mathcal{F}_t for some filtration {Ft}\{\mathcal{F}_t\}).
