serotonin

This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector.
  • There are 14 kinds of serotonin receptors; most (but not all) are G protein-coupled. The central nervous system has almost all of them; and blood vessels and the GI tract have a subset.
    • Probably the most interesting is the 5-HT2A receptor (Wikipedia). This one (and only this one) is the target of psychedelics, including psilocybin, mescaline, and LSD. That means these drugs act very differently from something like SSRIs, which generally increase serotonin, and so affect all serotonin receptors. Psychedelics only affect 1/14 of the serotonin system!
