grading
This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector.- How should I think about grades when teaching a class?
- I believe in mastery learning. Feedback isn't useful unless students have the ability and motivation to iterate on it.
- Autograding, CS188-style, can dramatically shorten the iteration loop.
- Instead of asking for finished papers or projects, require submission of drafts.
- Grades destroy the motivation to adapt to feedback. If an assignment comes back with comments + a high grade, the student won't think they need to read the comments. If comments + a low grade, they won't want to.
