Ultimately what is attractive in fashion is confidence. you can break almost all of the rules if it's clear that you're doing it as a matter of authentic self-expression rather than laziness or ignorance.

• It's a wonderful thing to encourage someone's exploration into art and aesthetics and how those relate to their own identity. That's what I think of as style. It's a shitty thing to tell someone that they look bad (unless you're doing it instrumentally, like they're asking for advice on what to wear to a job interview or something).
• If someone thinks something looks bad and wants thoughts on how to improve it, that's fine. But if someone thinks something looks good, and you shit over it because it doesn't match your aesthetic or that of the 'cool kids' you hang out with, then you're just building yourself up by tearing someone down and it's at best a zero-sum interaction. Hating on people who define their personal style by cargo shorts is an example of this.
