DMT

This page is from my personal notes, and has not been specifically reviewed for public consumption. It might be incomplete, wrong, outdated, or stupid. Caveat lector.

Chemically, (n,n-dimethyl)-tryptamine is a tryptamine molecule with two methyl groups hanging off of the nitrogen (amine). It's referred to as DMT or equivalently as n,n-DMT, where the 'n,n' prefix simply describes the location of the methyl groups.

DMT is the base for most (all?) tryptamine psychedelics, for example:

  • psilocybin (aka 4-PO-HO-DMTNote that the 'n,n' descriptor is usually omitted from these derived molecules, for simplicity, but properly we would include it. For example, psilocybin is really '4-PO-HO-n,n-DMT', and so on.) and psilocin (4-HO-DMT)
  • 5-MeO-DMT

It is also a psychedelic in its own right. The free base can be smoked or vaped directly. Various salt forms can be taken orally in conjunction with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, which is required to prevent the body from breaking down the DMT before it enters the brain; this combination is the essence of ayahuasca.
